Lockdown Blog #3 - 'I got skills, what ya going to do bout it?'

Photo by Andras Vas on Unsplash

So the baton has been handed to me this week, I wonder if you can guess who writes each blog?

I don’t know about you but this ‘lockdown’ is going on a lot longer than I thought it would. I am missing so many things that I have taken for granted.

Visiting family, friends, just going outside for no reason but for the fact I could and even work!.

What are you missing?

What will be the first thing you do when we can leave our homes??

Our last 2 blogs have looked at ‘Try something new’ and ‘Humanity United’, this blog is kind of linking to both of these. When I see people clapping on a Thursday night or see the extraordinary things the general public is doing I feel so moved to the point I can feel tears forming in my eyes. This lockdown I can say that I am so proud to call myself ‘British’ we, as a country are all playing our part. This reminds me of this quote:

This royal throne of kings, this sceptred isle,

This earth of majesty, this seat of Mars,

This other Eden, demi-paradise,

This fortress built by Nature for herself

Against infection and the hand of war,

This happy breed of men, this little world,

This precious stone set in the silver sea,

Which serves it in the office of a wall

Or as a moat defensive to a house,

Against the envy of less happier lands,

This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England.’

William Shakespeare, Richard II

We all, at this time, can stand with pride and say we are British, another guy you might know said ‘It is no use saying we are doing our best. You have got to succeed in doing what is necessary.’ - Winston Churchill. We are all currently doing what is necessary to not only help ourselves but our fellow countryman and fellow human beings.

Now enough quote copying and down to what I want to say.

I have woken up many mornings thinking what shall I do today?

I have done odd jobs around the house, made my office more efficient, started a new tv series on a recommendation from a friend. But more importantly, I have had to learn new skills, up-skill, or find my hidden gifts (I’ll let you be the judge of that one). This comes in the form of Video Conferencing and Final Cut Pro X.

As a church, we currently can’t meet, so all our services have to be done via video conferencing software or recorded and uploaded to various social media and video platforms. This has proven to be easy, or so I thought! My skills in video editing are basic, I mean I can splice together some videos and upload but I am sure plenty of others can do this. But how can I make my videos stand out, show the professionalism and high standards people expect? You all know I don’t take myself seriously, at all. But when I am asked by the church to edit and upload recorded sermons, they expect it to look fantastic. So what do I do? Well I turn to YouTubers, YouTube Tutorials, and of course, just play around with it and see what I can do. I have learned so much from just watching tutorials online and now I can make some pretty cool videos, if I do say so myself!

So, if you are still reading this (which I will be surprised if you are), get online and learn a new skill, improve the skill you already have or even find that hidden gift. The internet has so much to help us learn and grow our skills and then share that skill and be the best you can be.

Yes we will still wake up each morning thinking "is what going on, actually happening?”, and as J.K Rowling said in her book through Albus Dumbledore:

Of course it is happening inside your head, Harry, but why on earth should that mean that it is not realHarry Potter: Deathly Hallows.

This is happening, but we will never be in a position like we are now again (hopefully), so let’s make the most of it, let's learn a new skill, find that hidden gift, and share it!

We can not wait to see what comes out of this Lockdown in the form of each one of you.

Stay Home and Stay Safe,

This week’s resource..

Video: Grace Unplugged

Can be found: Netflix and DVD

About: Grace Unplugged is an Inspirational movie starring Amanda "AJ" Michalka as an 18-year-old Christian singer/songwriter, Grace Rose Trey. Beautiful, highly talented, and restless, Grace is so far undiscovered outside the church. She performs there each Sunday with her gifted father Johnny, the praise music director at Freedom Community Chapel, a small-town Alabama church. A former rock star, Johnny Trey charted a Billboard number-one single 20 years before. When the hits stopped coming he crash-landed hard, a one-hit wonder. Johnny found Christ and a new life for his family, far from the Hollywood Hills. One day without warning, Grace leaves for Los Angeles. She has landed a record deal with the help of Johnny's ruthless former manager and producer Frank "Mossy" Mostin. Mossy sees in Grace a potential pop superstar - the next Katy Perry. Cutting off contact with her parents, Grace seems prepared to walk away from her Christian faith and music to achieve her long-suppressed fantasy of Hollywood.
